You are correct and it will save you a half days unpaid labor, fuel, tols and wear and tear on your truck too. Work smarter not harder. If I couldn't get a "feeling" over the phone the folks I was talking too where genuinely interested in my company actually doing some work, it wasn't worth my visit to see them. Save the money you would have spent going to see these knuckleheads and spend it on advertising so your phone rings more, with better quality calls. Remember, nothing is free.

Or offer to take the price of the estimate off of the final bill. It is still a free estimate, if they use your services. Maybe even an incentive, like $200 for the estimate, and take $250 off if they use you.

I've tried charging $50.00 for ins estimates just to cover my time and then take it off the bill, they pretty much say suck wind and hang up. FEMA calls are the worst, those people try and claim every problem their home has ever had and FEMA calls you and axes a bunch of questions, then you still don't get the job.

I used to give folks looking for free and unpaid insurance estimates the names of my three biggest competitors and would tell the perspective client once they got the three estimates to call us back and we would set up a consultation to review the estimates, make adjustments and schedule the project with us.
