Not real sure but I am leaning toward a bad reaction to the deet. This is going to sound funny but it should help alot.
Does anyone in the house use the clay facial mask stuff? The type they put on and as it dries and draws oils and junk out of the skin. If there is any around, First a small test area to see how much it stings, let it dry completely and rinse off. If it felt OK do the whole area. If you need to go buy some just get a cheap no frills type with not a lot of perfume in it. Your skin irritation is deep enough at this point that it is considered a wound so test everything in a small area before doing the whole thing.
Tell me how it goes

I think I turned the corner on this rash today. It seems better this evening. I wiped it down with vinegar a couple times today and it seems to be really dried out now and not as inflamed. The skin on the rash feels like an old cooter turtle though

vinegar and salt water. always lived near the ocean and whenever the itch started I would head to the beach. also Mom used vinegar and that did sting.

scalding hot water (as hot as you can stand) will give you a couple hours of itch relief
