COLUMBIA COUNTY
Officer Harold Barry was patrolling the Osceola National Forest when he observed several subjects in the palmetto flats attempting to hide from him. He notified dispatch and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Officer Jim Ellis and Lieutenant Scott Kihei who responded to assist. A female and a juvenile were found picking palmetto berries and detained. An adult male attempted to flee in a truck on a closed road and was successfully stopped. The female had a possible warrant and was arrested for removing plant life from the forest. The adult male was arrested for driving without a driver’s license. The juvenile was turned over to Child Protective Services and the vehicle was towed. Once at the jail, the staff learned the adult male had given false information so additional charges were filed through the State’s Attorney’s Office.
Officer Harold Barry was patrolling the Osceola National Forest when he came upon a truck loaded with approximately fifteen 100 pound bags of palmetto berries. The driver was cited for removing palmetto berries from the forest and the bags were dumped back in the forest.
