Yep, "nonexpanding, full metal case (military ball) ammunition for taking deer" is prohibited. I had to find some soft-tips for my M91 Mosin/Nagant just in case I wanted to lug that thing around during deer season.
M1 carbine :clap mean little shooters.could be used for multi purpose. The rd aint super impressive, but it will kill and it also has hi cap capabilities.Mine is very accurate. love it
x2 not sure of catalog but has ammo at good price and fun to shoot,
If you're serious about hunting with the rig, then go for the Garand. The carbine, while also a 30 cal is loaded with a lighter bullet, to much less velocity and it sheds that velocity rapidly. Not a problem if all you shooting will be at less than 50 yards, but if the distance begins to stretch out, it will be.
According to the book : Ammo and Ballistics, Second Edition by Bob Forker, 30 carbine ammo is normally loaded with a 110 gr bullet at 1990 fps which gives about 950 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. The energy drops to right at 600 ft lbs at 100 yards. It has always been a good rule of thumb that it takes at least 750 ft lbs on energy for big game hunting. Given these figures, the 30 carbine gets questionable at less than 100 yards. I'm not saying it won't work. And, I'm not saying you shouldn't use it. But, it is marginal at best.
Here's a comparison with the 30-30. Most factory 150 gr ammo for the 30-30 is loaded to about 2400 fps which gives about 2000 ft lbs of energy. At 100 yards, the energy is about 1350 ft lbs and at 2000 it is about 875 ft lbs. That's why the 30-30 has always been considered a great 100-150 yard deer round. It has the right amount of energy and is easy to both carry and use. The carbine, due to a smaller case, lighter bullet and reduced powder capacity is roughly 60% as effective as the 30-30. And most people today think the 30-30 is not that great.
So, again, if you're really thinking about hunting big game with the rig, go with the 30-06. But if most your shooting will be plinking and just having fun, then the 30 carbine is a great little package. And, if you go with the 30 carbine and want to shoot deer with it, do the deer a favor and keep the shots close. It's too easy to wound and lose game with a light round like the carbine. After all, it was designed for very short range combat as a substitute for the 45 ACP. When the military thought they were going to do any long range work, the 30-06 is what they brought into play. There's a reason for that.

garand all the way. they still use it in 600 meter open sight freehand competitions, nuff said. the 30 carbine makes a nice pistol round in one of rugers single actions. and I'm sure the carbine is handy and fun to shoot. would,t mind having both, but the garand would definately be my first choice, then the BAR.
I never understood the need or want of hunting with these military or assault rifles.I see some of these guys going hunting looking more like they're going off to war.Guess I'm just old fasioned in my ways.I want a bullet that's gonna flat knock somthing on it's ass and do some damage when it hits.
