I have asked this question on a couple other non-hunting lists, and wanted to get the opinion of hunters now....

If you had a choice between these two military rifles the M1 Garand, and the M1 Carbine
which would you prefer? and why?

I have an opportunity to obtain a one of these rifles thru the CMP and cash flow prevents me from buying both....

the firearm would be for recreational use mainly ie Hunting, plinking, camping, etc, and possible other defense reasons....

thanks
G

i would go with the garand. that is 30-06, versus the carbine at just a 30 cal. ammo easier to find for the garand. jmo

Yeah I have been leaning towards the Garand as well, strictly based on ammo availability.
but both guns have their Pros/Cons...

Just be careful shooting commercial rounds through the Garand. I've read where the pressures are higher with commercial stuff vs military ball ammo, and some parts of the Garand could fail.

thanks for the info on the ammo pressures. I didn't know that before. Some quick research on the web and found that you are correct, and there are only a couple commercial manufacturers that claim to make M1 Garand safe, M2 style military ball ammo. And because I dont have a reloader that would be very important for me to know.
second problem is FMJ ammo can't be used for hunting here in Florida, if memory serves. So i would need a hollow point or soft tip ammo
