It is a death sentence to be sure, but you don't have to cut ties with him & the family. Now is when they need friends/support most. Depending on the extremes of care he is willing to use & his will to live,it could go on for years. I had a 30 y/o kid with ALS that lasted over 10 years. 24/7 RN's/ ventilator/ feed tube/ etc. All he could do was move an eyebrow, but in 2000 with an electrode on that eyebrow he could operate a tv/radio/ computer/ talk to me via machine in full sentences/ played cards with people all over the world. Often he would say Dave check this one out & have an image of a hot babe on his computer screen, he even had a girlfriend. Once he gave up, He was gone in 2 weeks. It takes a huge toll on friends/ family/ even caregivers & was the most difficult Pt loss I ever had to face.
Terrible. Early onset Altzeimers is what we are dealing with. Hit mother inlaw in her 50s. She is still around 8 years later, as her body wont shut down. She cant talk and is a walking vegetable. All you can do is support the person and do what you can. What Nacho said is spot on.

I got the call today (from my new lease manager) that our old lease manager passed away this morning from complications from the Lou Gehrig's
He was a good man and surely will be missed. Wish I had got to know him a little earlier in life
:angel
