Never had it happen before...but I'll be damned if my cast iron skillet didn't crack last night on the stove while it was heating up. Nothing out of the ordinary, electric range, medium heat..luckily it was empty. Starting in the middle of the skillet, crack went all the way up and over the outside edge, split it all the way through.

Did some reading on it and they say it can be caused by thermal shock (never happened to this skillet) or a flaw in the metal. I'll tell you one thing, that's one hell of a violent sound it makes when it lets go. Everyone in the house jumped including the dogs. RIP...it was one of my favorites :censored

Dang, that's just sad. I'd hang it up in the garage in a place of honor :>) at least it'll still be around. I love my cast iron. Got most of it from my grandma when she passed.

When you lose a good piece of CI, it deserves its own funeral :angel

I'm in the process of downsizing & have 3 for you, lg ,real lg, & a small muffin type, all well seasoned. Along with some books on fishing, cooking game, big game animals. I'd rather donate or give it away than endure the squabbling over 2$ on a 50-100$ item, & people stealing crap labeled for 25 cents. I'll get by fine with 1 gigantor sized no handle (2 eared) skillet & 1 dutch oven. Not to mention furniture/ non flat screen TV's/ vcr's/ dressers/bookcases/bureaus etc. you can drive away like Jed Clampett.
