Well my right knee has been giving me problems for the last 3 years. I favor my left and find it hard to climb a ladder leg over leg. So i think i might have a torn acl. I know one day i was moving a piano and felt something stretch behind my knee.
So i went to the docs yesterday and he is sending me for an mri wednesday. He said he can guarantee i dont need knee reconstruction but he can also guarantee the results of the mri will not be normal.
I know when i went scalloping last time i could lay on a bed, lift my leg up but could not bend up my lower leg up without extreme pain.
Well see..
Is this major surgery? Long recovery?
I work in surgery as a nurse and have seen thousands of knee replacements. Knee replacement is no joke. Probably one of the most painful surgeries there is. First and foremost don't go to a hack surgeon. An infection in these procedure will ruin your life. You need to be sure you have a top notch guy. I know one in Tampa, his name is Dr Lyons. One of the most conscientious surgeons I have ever seen do the procedure. He is the guy people go see when other guys screw it up the first time. The other key aspect is do not lax on the physical therapy afterwards. The results are great usually though and most people are so happy with the results that they would repeat it or do repeat for the other knee if they need it. I don't mean to scare you or try to say don't do it, just have realistic expectations. The recovery blows but when you get through it you will be glad you did it if you truly need it.
Amputate
Any good ortho Dr. will know right off the bat if you need and ACL or MCL surgery without a MRI simply by a few twist of the knee. sounds to me like youmight have a few torn meniscus which can be repaired with ortho surgery. with good luck you'll be out like 3-5 days.

Well the doc said that its prob just a tear in the acl. No big reconstruction. But the mri will let me know..
