Keep them in the coop/pen at least a month before free ranging them. So they know its home and they feel secure in there.
My girls picked it up after a day or so. It's the most comfortable and inviting thing around come night-time, and they know it.
Just got 6 new ones. My others have gone thru henopause or something and just about quit laying. Wife looked at me this morning and said "seriously? We only have 3 eggs in the entire house"?
SO I found a really good deal on these 6, all under a year old, and some just started laying. (she had receipts to prove age).
This is a temporary housing for them until I can figure out how to house 12 chickens now...

Hmmm, sounds to me like you have some more meat chickens Allen. :bbq
Nah, these are pets. Plus, these old hens would be so tough you'd wear out a pressure cooker trying to get them tender. I just went out there and studied the back yard. I think I figured out how to expand their pen fairly cheap. Will get on that after the holiday week
