Any of you ever tried to raise rabbits for meat? Seems like less trouble than chickens.
Yes, we did it as kids in the 70's and 80's in upstate NY..... Good eatins too.... Not sure about down here in FL with the high temps and fleas/ticks....
They have some crosses that work well in the heat.
My father-in-law raised meat rabbits for a long time over on Merritt Island. Man, we'd eat fried rabbit & BBQ'ed rabbit. It was great. He never had any issues with heat, fleas or ticks. And they didn't take up a lot of space either. His pens where off the ground and right next to his horse barn.
He stopped doing it though when one day he went to slaughter one and whacked him in the head with his bat. The thing didn't die but squealed like a baby and freaked him out! :eek Haha, he said that was it, he'd never do it again. Oh, he finally killed that rabbit but he had to hit him a few times before he stopped squealing! If I remember right his rabbits were the big floppy eared kind. Man they tasted good. Got plenty of meat from those things too.
If I had a place I could do it I definitely would. :bbq
I am going to raise a few here soon. We did it when I was a kid. Going to build a pen right above my compost pile
:crap:
