Last night I had a lot of things on my mind and couldn't sleep so I drove was up to my property very early this morning.
By the time it was light enough to see I had been up in my ladder for about 20 minutes.

Just few minutes after the sun rise I saw a sounder of about 8 pigs in the orange grove about 300 yards away. They were moving parallel to me moving and stopping every 30-50 yards or so. They were moving pretty quickly with smaller ones in the front and two larger sows in the rear. It was very interesting to see them in action and I was surprised how quickly they moved. When they were about 150 yards from me I took out my little aluminium whistle I have on my key chain and gave it a short loud blast. Just as quickly as I blew the whistle the entire sounder came to a complete stop... no movment at all for a second. Then they all scattered in all direction for a second but then little ones changed their direction and ran in the direction of the large sow... back in the direction that they came.

I didn't carry my rifle with me and those pigs were outside of my property but if I had been hunting and had my rifle I could have shot any one of those pigs during that second they were still. I'm going to try it on the next deer I see to see how it reacts.

In the meantime, I'm going to add a whistle to my hunting equipment.

kc45, That whistle will stop an ol' buck, too. Maybe not if you have jumped him up, but if his is moving on his own, a loud whistle from your lip's will bring him to a stop. Been there and done that, even when one was runnin" an ol' doe! A whistle would probably be a good addition to anyone's huntin' gear for more reasons than just stoppin' critters. Treefarmer

Whistling, mouth grunting, or even yelling at a buck when he is bird-doggin a doe, and watching him hit the brakes while you line up the crosshairs on him is one of the most adrenalin pumping moments that exist in the outdoor world..

i whistled at a big pig in upper hillsborough on a hike one afternoon so my lady could get a good look at her first "wild hog" . stopped him dead in his tracks right there, and a lightbulb went off in my head.
