Was you stand rusted? I do know the majority of todays stand are made in China, there steel is a much lesser grade than what we use here.Glad your ok,what do you think caused the collapse?
No not at all besides some surface rust and it wasn't where it bent at. I think it was caused by the nearly perpendicular angle to the tree and the fact that I was unstable trying to come down. Also I weight 225 so I'm sure that didn't help. It was also a cheap stand so I bet it was made cheaply also.
Triple Creek Reaper- it was definitely a "come to Jesus" moment. I definitely thanked the Lord he saved me for my daughter and hopefully my wife too. I also plan on wearing a harness this season when I do get to the woods although a harness wouldn't have helped in this situation, at least not the kind I have now.
Yeah, when you are taking everyting down for the season most of the systems everyone uses will not work anymore unless you are willing to leave atleast one rope permanantly tied to the tree. I am surprised we don't hear more of this when people go to install their stands for the 1st time before all the safety measures are put in place.
yep, thats a real problem with the ladders and it's the kind I've been using most lately. the tree is too far from the ladder for the linemans belt and although a safety rope and prussic knot will work it's not in place the first trip up the tree for the season and it's removed the last trip down. if you threw a rope over a branch and tied a prussic knot to the doubled line you'd be able to retrieve it at the bottom of the tree but I don't know if the knot would hold on a doubled line, plus you'd need twice the length of rope, what to do? my old hunting bud says I'm too old and fat for tree work and belong on the ground.
Glad you are Ok brother. You realize there are more important things in life at those moments.
Taking down/putting up stands are IMHO the most dangerous things we do as hunters.
I recently took all my stands down by myself, which is totally against everything I preach. However, what I did was drag a big extension ladder behind my ATV. I used it to unbuckle all the stands so I didn't have to climb them and unbuckle them. SafER, but not really all that safe. I just had to get my stands out and had noone to help me. On the same day I just about flipped my ATV backwards on me
Maybe give that a thought next time

That's actually how my dad puts up the few ladder stands he has with an extension ladder. He taught me that way and me (being dumb) hardly ever does it like that. I've learned my lesson this time! Thanks
