My son was supposed to be stationed at Eglin AFB up in Ft Walton Beach after he finishes tech school in July, but the USAF decided they had plenty of new airmen there and changed his orders to Langley AFB, Virginia. Still a pretty good assignment, and he should get some chances for some TDY (temporary duty) trips to other places. Plus, it's a historic area with lots of places to visit and there's some pretty good fishing and hunting up there.
I know I'll probably make at least one trip up there this year to visit, especially since my brother lives on the west side of Virginia and knows where to kill some deer! Looking at Google maps, and letting them pick a route, they take me from Sarasota up I-75 to just north of Ocala, then hitting US301 northeast to I-10 just west of Jax, then onto I-95.
Now I've driven that direction to go to Georgia to hunt, as well as to visit Hilton Head on business, see friends in NC, etc. I've never taken the US 301 jog across the state, I always took I-4 thru Orlando to I-95 and then head north. I can see where the route Google suggests is shorter mileage wise, but is it FASTER? I'll drive 100 miles further if I can get there fast enough to make it worthwhile!
So, anyone here made the trip on US301 from Ocala up to I-10 around Baldwin? if so, does traffic move pretty good, or are there county mounties around every corner? How about construction? I know I-95 has had some ongoing construction, does anyone know how that is progressing?
I'd appreciate any advice or tips from folks who have made parts of that trip recently or know the route fairly well.
that whole run of 301 from i-75 to jax is full of speed traps. couple little towns you go thru, but if the speed limit says 35--- you better do 35.

I have made that same exact trip more times than I can count going to Georgia. I thought the same as you one time and took 75 to 10, and then over to the East. I can tell you it is MANY miles further and a tad longer than getting off in Ocala and taking 301 up. Most of the traffic is 55-60, but moves pretty good with the exception of going thru the towns. There are a few speed trap towns on up the way(Lawtey and Waldo come to mind)
Now what I don't understand...Coming from way down south like you are...It just seems like it would be shorter for you to cut over on I4 over to the east coast and pick up 95. If it were me driving, that is the way I would go

Like I said in my post, I usually do take I-4 to I-95. Heck, I'd never take I-75 up to I-10 to go east. I've just never made the trip on 301 from Ocala to I-10 (well, not all at once, I have traveled most of it at one time or another but it's been many years), and was wondering how it was. I can leave home and be hitting Jax in usually 4 hours or less going the 1-4 route. We made it to Hilton Head in just over 6 hours. If it takes the same time going 301 or going through Orlando on interstate the whole way, I'm taking interstate. But if the 301 route would save 30-45 minutes, and it ain't a bad drive, I wouldn't mind seeing that part of the state again.
when i travel up to jax, to meet with my fellow employees up there. i take the 301 way. it takes me 3 1/2 hours.
