Today, strangely enough is back up your data day, seems funny, that they seem to have a day for everything, but it's a good point. how many of us back up your data files on your computer?
I know first hand how traumatic it is to have a puter crash, and i thought to have lost years of pictures, i know that seems dramatic, to use the word "traumatic", but it happened shortly after the death of my son, and so many of the photo's video's and memories were on that puter. luckily, i managed to salvage the pictures, and now i keep 2 backups.
Buy a external hard drive, and back up your data/pictures! it's easy. and do it every few months, sooner if you want.
how many of you know where those disks that came with your puter are? did you make that recovery CD that your computer keeps prompting you to make? or do you ignore it? those are crucial if you have to restore your machine.
keep a good antivirus running and updated, i have had great luck with Norton/symantec. viruses can also cause the loss of your data, and don't back up an infected computer to your clean external hard drive, if you have been backing your data up. i don't leave my external hardrives attached, unless i am backing up.
Often, when a puter dies, the saved data is still there, could be a bad power supply, bad motherboard, or some other component, only if your hard drive itself crashes, is your data normally lost.
Just something to think about.
good advice
Hopefully in a hurricane or house fire‚ etc. you'll remember to grab the backup drives! I've found that most people will forget to do regular backups. So I've started having clients sign up for an online service like Carbonite. For like $50 a year it keeps you backed up and safe. There are other similar services, but Carbonite is as good or better than any.
