I always thought that the deer would be up feeding in the cold to generate body heat. The colder the better I always thought. I had read somewhere that when the temps drop that they generated body heat by eating. Guess I might have to rethink some of the times I head out to the woods.
Based on what we have seen, the deer won't get up and feed till after the frost melts. I have yet to see a deer with a frost on the ground before 9:30 AM
In my opinion the colder the better. I have seen plenty of game moving in temps as low as 18 dergrees here in Florida. Shot a 200LB boar hog off one of my feeders in Perry and the temp was 22 degrees. Shot a 4 point in Green swamp when it was so cold my water bottle in my backpack was frozen. Shot 2 6 points in one morning on my old lease with temps in the 30's.
3:30 am cracker jacks and orange soda. The breakfast of champions. Let's see what takes a dirt nap. Lol
You should have some HBS to keep you warm.
When we had a lease just south of Madison, we saw lots of deer when it was cold (40 or less). One morning it was as cold as I've ever been in the woods of Florida, in the low 20s. We had 6 people out on stands and 4 of us killed bucks. The other 2 guys saw deer, but they were waiting for big uns. But that was back about 15 years ago, so maybe this "global warming" has changed things!
if you can find anything resembling a hill in this state hunt uphill in a sunny area in the cold. the cold settles into low lying areas. I was out with crock, strunes and hogman today and it was warmer at 6am then at 8:30, plus the wind is picking up a little.
