Building your own is a fun project...

Here's the kid with the first build. I gave him a lower receiver and a Bag-O-Parts. He put it together mostly on his own.

Here's the end product....

Thank you guys for all those information that you guys are giving me.

I would love to build my own from a scratch to finish.

Does it require any kind of special tools to build it?

Less than $20 for tools on the lower.
@ $75 for tools to build the upper....(that price assumes you have a bench vice, and a torque wrench)

Now to save money, a enterprising person might ask to "rent" the correct tools for.... say...a box of their favorite bullets....

ar15dotcom has a build it yourself section...very easy to follow, and list the tools needed.

Building your own AR / M4gerie can be fun. It is a great learning experience. However at the end of the day, while you can save money, it really isn't much if any. In my opinion you can spend a hundred or two more and buy a quality rifle like Noveske, Colt, Bravo Company Manufacturing, Daniel Defense, or S&W. If you want to build one, besides AR15.com Brownells has a lot of resources on their web site to walk you through the process. M4carbine.net has a lot of information about the Technical Data Package (AKA Milspec) when choosing your parts and components. Places for quality parts are bravo Company Manufacturing and G&R Tactical. Don't forget Spikes either.
