Good, bad, POS, ok, not ok???????? In .308 specifically
Have never owned one but an old man, when I was a young man, hunted in the old Farmton area (before it was shot gun only) used one quite well. He had a 99 in 250/3000 and it was a slick deer killing rifle! 2 of my brothers-in-law own 99's and they are well pleased with them. They are either 308's or 243's? wish I knew more about them.

They made 4 different 99's. First one had a brass "cartridge counter" and an internal magazine. Second was also a cartridge counter but it had stainless not brass cartridge counter. Third was a detachable magazine without cartridge counter and the last one was an internal magazine without cartridge counter. Most we made in 250/3000 or 300 Savage but they also made them in 243, 30-30, 7mm-08, 284 and 308. We few were made in 7mm-08 and 284. They made some in other calibers also but they were all small than 243, again very few of them were produced.
I have a buddy who has two of them in 308, a detachable mag and bronze cartridge counter and they are both excellent shooting and accurate out to 150 yards. Most had levers which were case hardened and colored and the deluxe model had straight or Monte Carlo comb impressed checkered stocks. Price, model, caliber and condition are the biggest factors when purchasing a 99 since it could be a $200 gun or a $1000 gun in the current used firearm market. Blue book is solely a reference and fair market value could fluctuate as much as 50% up or down depending on the factors listed above and demand.
