I know someone will lead me in the correct direction I have a AR15 223 , and a Ruger 44 mag carbine , I am thinking about upping my AR to a 6.8, I can sell the 44 mag and get enough to purchase a 6.8 upper , no just to let you know I only hunt Hog and Deer her in the state of florida, other then small game, what do you all think , should i keep the 44 carbine and use it for hog and deer and forget about the 6.8 , or get the 6.8 Thanks
Well, I know I am gonna catch some hell for this but I am not a fan of the Ruger 44 mag Carbine anymore. I always wanted one and finally got into one through a series of trades and the right price. I have a Winchester 94 Trapper Saddle Ring Carbine 16" Pre-safety, custom ported with a Burris Fixed 4X Scope which out shoots that Ruger X4 off a sand bag at 50 yards.
Been trying to sell my Ruger 44 mag carbine for $500 as that's the average selling price over the last 90 days on gunbroker and I still have it. Going to take it to the Maitland gun show this weekend with a couple other guns I've picked up in collections and see if I can drum up some interest or maybe find something interesting to trade for.
To answer your question, it all depends upon your preference. I personally don't like hunting with "Black Guns" (AR's) but that's probably because I carried one off and on for 22 years in the Army.
The 6.8 is a great round, but expensive. Personally I like .308.
imo use the 44 , you already have it, ammo is cheaper and shots are close enough down here and besides you are a little old to be running around like another one of these Johnny Rambo wannabes,LOL.
keep the 44 mag carbine and upgrade your 5.56 AR to 300 blackout. Same mags, bolt as 5.56 just a barrel swap. And ammo is not bad priced.

Easy now....Aren't most hunting rifles a derivative of some military application?? This is just the latest one. My 6.8 is short, light and easy to maneuver, I am looking forward to using it this year for the 1st time. Follow up shots are quick and it was cheaper than a BAR .270.
I do 2nd Kemster's opinion of adding the .300 blackout barrel to your .556. I might add one of these to my collection as well.
