I really don't need more hate mail but seriously KC, as a parent teaching your kid it's ok to fire a bullet up in to the air?, possibly damaging the electic line (I believe thats called vandalism) or wherever the bullet may land? risking arrest over a pair of sneakers. that's just the stuff the anti gun people need to hear and see.

Well, perhapse but like I said I had him line up the shot so the lake was the backstop (3 miles wide body of water just 100 feet behind the line) for the bullet to land. It was 33 degrees and nobody was out in the lake. As for hitting the line, I knew my son was accurate enough to miss the line by 10-12 inches. I was willing to bet the bullet would fall harmlessly into the lake and he wouldn't get anywhere near the line.

your parenting methods are none of my biz but I feel basic safety is, to all who may read this. shooting a bullet that can travel far into the air, or over water is a very basic safety no-no. we know the accuracy of an open sighted cricket and a 6 yr old are not great, even if a lucky shot may be possible. sure we have all done things we shouldn't have when young, but I don't ever remember my father showing me how or encouraging me. at 6 y/0 a kid may be physicaly able to line up sights and squeeze a trigger well, but the responsability and mental ability to grasp the potential consequences of their actions is just not there yet. they are still eating boogers at that age. granted each kid grows/matures mentaly and physicaly at different rates. 5 years from now he may be in a different place with a gun and remember, my dad had me shooting into the air and over water when I was 6, so it must be ok. and you won't be there to stop him. I'm not trying to publicly embarass you, but I'm sure you love your kid and wouldn't want anything bad to happen to him. I've seen firsthand little kids being brought into the hospital severly mangled/scarred, sometimes permanently from doing things like riding a quad or dirt bike too young, and the pain and guilt the parents go through is much worse than what the kid faces. so I'm sorry for being a buttinski, but felt it needed to be said publicly.

Like I said, I didn't see any danger in taking that shot. I knew where the bullet was going to land (in the empty lake) and I knew he shot well enough to miss the line by wide margin from 10 yards or so he was hooting at. He started shooting at 6 y/o and he is 7 now and he's shoot almost every weekend with his rifle at our property so he gets a lot of practice. He shoots well enough to hit Ritz crackers at 15-20 yards regularly with his Crickett rifle. As for what he will do 5 years from now, I have been teaching him to make right decisions... it's all I can do as a parent.

I didn't see it any different than people who shoot tree rats in trees.
