I own a 50Beowulf with the factory brake. The brake works great. I know because I had a guy come out to my club with the almost identical weapon, with out a brake, and got a opportunity to shoot the two, side by side. I'd guess......double the recoil. With the brake(mine) the weapon has the recoil of a 20ga. firing a dove/quail load.

I also own a Weatherby MKV Accumark with a brake. It is chambered in .30-378 Wby Mag. It also has the proprietary brake on it called the Accubrake. It can be screwed off and the weapon came with a thread protector that you can screw on. During the very first range session I fired one shot without the brake installed. Same here,a drastic reduction in the effects of recoil. With brake, my 210gr Bergers @ 3150fps feel like a .30-06. Without......OUCH !!

One more example. I own a Taurus 6" chambered in 454Casull. It has a brake(expansion chamber). This, coupled with the excellent design of the grips, drastically reduces the rearward push and the upward rise of the weapon during recoil. My load is a 335gr hardcast, with the max allowed of H110. I have shot the Rugers and the Freedom Arms both. Both being w/o a brake. My Taurus is remarkably "tamer" than either of those.

Some years ago I shot a Ruger #1H chambered in 416Rigby. It had a JP brake installed. Blast....heck yeah ! Recoil and muzzle rise....extremely mild !

As you know, recoil and muzzle rise effects different people in different ways. I find that in allot of cases shooters associate muzzle blast(the over pressure) with recoil. Also muzzle rise with recoil transmitted to the shoulder. I do not.

I feel that a well designed muzzle brake with a expansion chamber cut into the bbl or designed into the brake, will drastically reduce the effects of recoil ESPECIALLY in the larger calibers, pushing the heavier bullets. These are my feelings. Please....lets not argue. ---SAWMAN

i have only fired one rifle with a muzzle break, it was a browning a-bolt chambered in .270wsm. i fired the same gun at the same bench and same day without the break and the difference was clear. sawman is dead on in my opinion with what he said.
