I've got the same setup as your top 870 in 20g....the boys laugh until I remind them to look on the wall.

I used buck shot first time hog hunting, that will never happen again. I got a mossy slugster 12g with a 24" rifled and ported barrel. have a reddot on it,and use hornady SST sabot slugs.

I have had and shot a bunch of rifled and smooth bored shotguns with slugs. It's all preference, budget and most importantly "what you shoot well". I used to be a pump action slug gun guy until on two occasions during two seperate deer seasons I missed both first shots and didn't jack the pump fast and hard and the gun didn't chamber a second round. Now I'm a semi auto guy. I think it was easier when I only had one shotgun and a .22LR in the early 80's. Grew up in Western NY in a shotgun only area and started with a 16 gauge Remington 870 Wing master 28" plain barrel modified choke with single bead and the same gun in a Winchester model 12. We only shot Remington sluggers and dad and I killed deer every year. Since then I became a gun nut and it's much more difficult now then it was when I only had one of two shotguns to chose from. I currently have two dedicated slug guns; a Remington 1187 12ga 3" with a 20" Rifled Cantilever barrel with a Leupold 2-7x33 VX-1 scope and a Remington 1100 20ga 2 3/4" with a 21" smooth bore rifled sights. Both guns produce 3" groups at 100 yards and they "work for me".

Savage/ Browning and some of the other big mfgr's jumped on the bolt slug gun craze for a while. the Browning is very nice but mega bucks. the best one was a small company and much more reasonable $. I can see the gun but not the brand. It'l come to me.
