This is how it works in most of the US!
Some states like NY, NJ, OH, IL, CA and a few select others have required handguns to be registered as did Washington D.C. until they were sewed and the law was over turned last year. The NRA is actively pursuing Illinois and the City of Chicago on the registration of handguns issue. These states also require you to obtain a "pistol permit" to "possess" a handgun, which in some states also allows you to carry them concealed also.
We in FL have no issues with gun control compared to NY, NJ, OH, IL, and CA! Especially hand guns! Sorry to get off track on this thread about AR's!
As far as the AR thing goes, been there done that. For a hunting gun I'd personally go with a .308 AR platform, if I wanted to use an AR to hunt with. As an all around "fun gun" for the range, tin cans, plicking, and some hunting an AR-15 in .223 would be fine. Personally, there are many other options for outstanding hunting and plicking guns out there. A Ruger 10/22 in .22 LR for the range and plicking and a good bolt action rifle (short action - .243, .260, 7MM-08, .280, .308) is outstanding for anything huntable in this state! In the southeast for that matter.
Thanks for all the advice.

If my choices were limited to a 308 sized rifle, I'd rather hunt with a light weight bolt gun than the AR10 platform. Heck, you can purchase a bolt gun and one very, very nice scope for the cost of a AR10.

That's exactly what I just said!
