Either one will work. Both are good well pass the 500 yd mark. Ballistics are close. The only advantage of the 308 is more different bullet weights to choose from.
X2! The top five calibers ever produced minus .223/5.56 are .30-06, .308, .270, .30-30 and probably .243. This is based upon the number of firearms produced for the military and civilian market.
No matter what happens in America you will always be able to find surplus .30-06 and .308 ammo since these rounds where so widely used and produced for the military. .30-06 hasn't been used by the US military as an issue caliber for more than 30 years and I'd guess the US government probably still has a few million rounds in cold storage at a depot. .308 is still an issue caliber in the M-60 machine gun and some sniper rifles. I'd guess uncle sam has more than a few million rounds of .308 in cold storage in the depots.
I prefer .308 and have had a few .270 rifles that shot awesome. It's a preference. The only recommendation I'd make is to stay away from any rifle round considered an "odd ball" or less popular unless you intend to reload for it or be willing to pay to get ammo once you find it, order it and have it shipped.
.30-06, .308, .270, .30-30 and .243 can be found at nearly every and any sporting good shop, gun shop, convienent store, or tackle shop that carries a supply of ammo and most walmarts that deal in sporting goods.
x3 on gunboy. Those are the rounds I grew up with, heard stories from Dad and uncles. Growing up in the north for 13 years, they tended to lean on the '06. My Uncle Ray was the 1st to break away and bought a 308. got a nice deer in New Hampshire that year. I am talking about the early 1950's. So guess what, the only one I don't have is the 308- oh and the 223. Had that in a T/C contender. great coyote gun.
Well I decided on the 308. Picked up Savage and will post pics soon. Thanks to everyone for their opinions. it was a tough choice but the 308 won by the slimmest of margins.
I rather have .308 than .270
more choices for the ammo and they're everywhere. Same for .270 as well but I just personally like .308
I don't want to pay same price for less powered ammunition
