Well I have racoons that keep eating the cat food on my back porch. These are city coons, not sure how I feel about eating something that has been eating garbage. Not quite fond of killing for nothing, but I'm sick of feeding these damn things.
Go get a live trap at Tractor supply. Do not get the cheap trap from Harbor Freight. A coon or tom cat will tear right out of it.
Bait it with cheap canned cat food. Shoot in the head with a 22CB short. Put in garbage bag and put out with trash. Ironically I caught one last night and did exactly that. I leave traps set around here just about every day of the year. I probably catch 50 coons/possums here a year

1. Ummm, no... Since they are immune to scorpions, cottonmouths, rattlers, and copperheads they are awesome at eating those snakes, and palmetto bugs, slugs, snails scorpions, and a dozen other things you'd much less rather have in your house.They don't carry more disease than any other animal and are actually very resistant to rabies.
2. Yes, yes I have. As a former wildlife rehabilitator I have literally handled hundreds of them and only been bitten once.
3. Actually they EAT rats, and mice, and moles, and baby raccoons, and muscovy duck eggs, and carrion, and... Well you get the idea.
Look it's your house and your right to do what you want and I'd happily help you shoot every raccoon from here to West Virginia but possums get a bad rap that they don't always deserve. Just sayin'...
