Alright so I have a dilemma. I am debating between using a 20 guage or .22LR for squirrel. I have no problem hitting my target with a .22 but unfortunately these squirrels at Lake Monroe like to hang up in the tree tops. There is some houses around the WMA and I dont feel quite comfortable to shoot up and take the chance of missing. I would use the 20ga but I am afraid it will tear up the meat too much. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks guys.
I love squirrel hunting with scoped 22lr. But, you will get less meat damage with a shotgun. Been useing solid point 22lr instead of hollow point and getting less damage with 22. # 7 1/2 or 9 shot make a lot smaller holes than 22lr. When useing shotgun I use #8 2 3/4'' 12ga. and waste a lot less meat than with 22.
My vote is for a 50 cal Black Powder rifle.
22 short.
I use a 22 mag cuz thats what I have and only take head shots, IF there is a good size tree for a backstop. if not don't shoot or use the shotgun either will work.
20 gauge!!! Unless you can head shoot tree rats...
