I'm looking for a place to take my grandson to introduce him to squirrel hunting and was driving past the Lochloosa WMA a few days back and noticed it looked like there were some pockets of decent looking squirrel habitat. I see from the WMA brochure for Lochloosa there is a small game season after deer season. Just wondering if any one has hunted squirrels there during this time and how it was. Thanks.
Not sure about this time of year compared to small game season but I went scouting yesterday after work for a couple hours and they were everywhere. Also saw two cotton tails. Id give it a try.
Can't help ya with Lochloosa, but if you want to head NW from there about 45 minutes......about late January/ early feb, when the red maples are bloooming, I can take you in some hammocks in another WMA and let you shoot squirrels till your grand kids shoulder falls off
The leaves are still off the trees, and they are easy to see. I usually shoot 3-4 with my 22 rifle just for a mess, but could limit out daily with no effort
Two seasons ago we plucked some squirrel out of Lochloosa, pretty easy to get a hand full. Bottom of the lake was a good place. Last year I stuck to plucking hogs instead. I think Andrews is daily quota during small game and a ton of squirrel come out of there every year. Goethe had some good places for squirrels, just make sure they are not fox squirrel before pulling the trigger.
my 2 cents worth;squirrels tend to run when the trees are bare. i would takehim to marshall swamp near ocala he can hunt from nov.12 untill march 4 lots of acorns including some white oaks and he will see deer (which he cannot shoot) as the season is closed at that time but it will help keep his interest up also he can shoot a hog if he sees one which would be a nice bonus.
