I am having a hard time figuring out whether or not we have foxes or coyotes roaming around my grandfathers property and the property around us. I have permission to shoot coyotes on sight from the property owner of the peat mine next to my grandfathers property. For the last few years every once in a while i see an animal that is about 24" tall at the shoulder, and is reddish brown with darker areas around the paws. I got a good look at it a couple months back while it was trying to stalk some geese. i do not want to shooot a fox! Is there any way to identify this animal as a fox or coyote, do foxes get this big in florida? i have a predator call and the first time i used it this animal came right out running down the road in the peat mine. we have seen coyotes on the property, and they are all over the dover area.

More than likely a yote. Can you put some animal scraps out and put a camera on it? Some old ground beef or chicken innards would work. You will have an answer in one night

i do not have a camera to put on it. however i had a large deer ham that a friend had given me i trimmed all the meat i could off the bone for my eating then took the leg bone, and a bunch of chicken scraps i had frozen and let them get really ripe in my truck for a few days in the heat this summer. put them out in the cow pasture, checked the next morning and every scrap was gone including the entire leg bone of that deer ham. the smellonly stunk my truck up for a day or 2. thinking about trying this again, and setting up my ladder stand, pull out the old .22 and sit for the night.

30.06,
The difference between a grey fox and a coyote to me is the fox is dainty and usually not near as big or ragged looking as a coyote. I've killed several coyotes while deer hunting and they have a wide range of colors, some a yellow/tan, some are black, some look a German shepard dog or any color in between. The little gray fox is usually true to the grey color on the top side with a hint of red on the under sides and the red fox is not easily mistaken for another critter. Maybe this might help make the ID before you down the wrong one :dtect !!

Thanks tree farmer, this animal was good size, did not have the white that the red fox has, and was rusty brown with paws and muzzle darker brown or black. i will get a better lookk at it b4 i decide what it is.
