I’m new to Florida and am looking for an area to hunt squirrels or rabbits near Tarpon Springs. I looked at the WMA regs for the areas near such as Green Swamp and it looks like the small game season only runs a few days a year! Am I reading the rules wrong or something? Why would you only be able to hunt squirrels or rabbits etc. only a few days a year on the wma’s that are thousands of acres large? Do they breed slower here or something? I see you can hunt small game during the general gun season but really do not want to be walking around when others are trying to hunt deer or hogs.

I’m coming from Oklahoma and Missouri, there wma’s are most void of people hunting small game and the seasons are open fairly long, starting to miss Oklahoma and Mo.

Im used to just juming in the nearest wma in the morning, shooting a couple bushy tails then heading home. No check stations, qoutas, waiting in line ect. I also see everybody is in to this lease thing, man shure is different here makes hunting seem like a chore!

Can anyone help me out as to where I can enjoy some small game hunting! 

Don't look at the name of the season, look at what's legal to take during each season. For instance, Green Swamp allows taking squirrels and rabbits in Archery, General Gun, and Small Game seasons. That's roughly from the middle of October to the middle of February.

Most of the other public lands allow "small game" to be taken during most other hunts well. Just pay attention to the what's acually listed as legal to take for each particualr season.

Oh yeah, Croom might be a good place for you as well. It's probably a little faster for you to get to from Tarpon Springs and the season's a little longer if you just hunting small game.

Also, just FYI, don't shoot our Fox Squirrels! They are the big squirrels similar to ya'lls Red Squirrels but these are a littler bigger and they are protected. They do taste great though!

you can take whatever game you like, that is legal during the seasons. A couple years ago i went dove hunting in richloam during archery season. i imagine i pissed of a few archery hunters, but the rules say what the rules say. You can hunt what you want as long as it is legal, i know for a fact that at green swamp during general gun season squirrels go up on the board with deer and hogs. I am willing to bet you would not be the only one hunting squirrels, in fact my deer hunting is so pitiful i am probably going to hunt for squirrel a few times myself this season.
