I'll be at SVI this upcoming Wed. morning. Wanted to put in for the Sambar and didn't. Now that I went and scouted the island a few weeks ago I wish I had. From what I've read and been told by some people that have been on that hunt, the success rate is low but it's a rare oppurtunity to bag a monster. I'll definitely be putting in for it this year. I'm going on the primitive weapons whitetail hunt and can't take a Sambar but if I get lucky enough to bag a deer right away I'm gonna move my stand to a wetter part of the island and try to get a Sambar on film. The Sambar seem to stay around the huge marshes and the trails and scrapes I saw reflected that. you definitely need waders to get to where I think they are. My buddy had a chance to take a doe (female) but passed on the last morning a few years ago.
The hunt I'm going on is a first come first serve type quota and was easy to get. I did a search for St. Vincent Island and Sambar deer to try to find out as much info as I could. Hopefully when I get back I can post some good info and pics.
