Supposibly there is an island in Florida where there is a certain type of deer. It is a cross between an Elk and whitetail (i think). They are supposed to get around 300lbs. Anyone ever heard of this? What's the name of the deer and how do you get a chance to hunt the island?
Sambar deer is the name of it. And FLDXT is right, St. Vincent island near Appalachicola.
Not sure about hunting and rules on the but yea sambar deer.
Here are the regulations for the hunts.
For what it's worth, the Sambar is not a cross between an elk and a deer. The Sambar is a large type of deer that is native to India and several other Asian countries. They get up to about 500 lbs, with an exceptional bull going up to about 700 lbs. Antlers normally will have 3 points per side and will be about 30 inches high with a good amount of mass.
Probably the best place to hunt them in the world is Australia and New Zealand. They imported them years ago and now have a lot of them. Like most Asian game, they are protected in their native lands. Many people consider them the hardest of all deer to hunt.
I've put in for the St Vincent hunt for the last 3 years and haven't had the luck of the draw so far. :cowboy
