you said you only try it in archery, so like lacy said go for it,it could be kinda like a test. maybe only try it on does and see how they react..could make em curious enough to come in closer
sounds to me like they are coming in first for a visual, stopping at 40 yds like you say , and then trying to circle behind and wind you. I'd keep a sharp eye on that back door. don't think i'd opt for a wagging tail tho, the deer might mistake it for a warning signal and hightail it outta there. maybe try some estrous scent.
I never had any luck with calls or grunts in Fl. Up in Mizzourah I killed several bucks using grunts and called lots of small deer in,once a yearling 2 feet from me.
