My partner put it on me this weekend. I was designated dragger and skinner.....
Went up Thursday midday and I decided to not hunt and get the grass cut and some chores done at camp. John went and collected his cameras. He had a pile of bucks and some good ones too.
Friday 5am came and I decided to hunt a stand I have not sat this year. The amount of deer/hog tracks I could see in my cap light walking in was encouraging. Sat till 11 and only saw woodpeckers and squirrels. Noone saw anything. I wanted to get all my cameras picked up and my plots overseeded in front of the storms that were on the way. Went to camp and looked at game cam pics. I slipped a camera in a little bottom down from one of my stands. To my surprise I have 5 different bucks, and a couple darn good ones passing thru. As the 2 weeks the cam went by, the amount of daytime pictures increased.
Here is one on the hit list
Friday eve we got int he stands just before the squall line hit. We both opted for ground blinds. When the rain quit, I figured they would move but I saw nothing. John had a "racked buck" run 3 does out in his food plot. He would not leave the tree line and step on out.
Saturday morning I got in the stand closest to where the bucks are on cam. There was hogs under my feeder when I went in, and they never left. As soon as I was able to finally get shooting light I let one fly at the biggest hog. They scattered everywhere. Got enough light to finally go look. Found the arrow with no blood and it didn't look like it was in the spot the hog was standing
Bout that time my buddy texted me and said he had a doe down. I said good I'll come help you cause I aint hunting no more till I figure out what's wrong with my bow. Went and helped him get his doe loaded up. It only ran maybe 20 yards and headed to camp
Went back in the afternoon. Sat in my box stand and at 7 I got down without seeing anything, and frustrated as heck. Thinking about a cold beer or three and a plate of spaghetti back at camp. Pick up my phone to text him that I'm down and heading in and I see "Big buck down. need help". I drove like a crazy person over to him. He was just getting to his truck and all out of breath not making any sense. I was like lets go while we have a tiny bit of ambient light. I grabbed my super bright tactical light and an extra set of batteries because he said the "deer was running as far as I could see"
We got to his blind and he had me walk to where the deer was standing. No blood, and I am think "oh crap this is gonna be a long night". We looked around a few minutes and I asked if he was sure he hit him and he said yes, by the sound of it. We found his bolt and it was covered in blood but none on the ground. He said the deer ran straight in then hooked right. I said I am going to scan real quick. I walked in and yelled back "hey, did you hear the deer hit water, because there is a 5 acre pond in here". He said no. I figured I would walk the edge of it. About 2 minutes later (almost completely dark at this point down in the hammock) I said, "Hey you old fart, bring your sled over here and load your deer up, I got him". Deer had piled up about 20 feet from the water edge. He had run about 100-150 yards w/o a drop of blood.
This was his best buck. A real heavy 6 and weighed 137 pounds.
By the way this was the one hunt I didn't tow my 4 wheeler and the drag out royally sucked. I sat down to dinner at 10:15 last night
Good job and Nice Deer :toast
