Well, it's been a while since I've posted. I review posts every now and then but have been extremely busy lately. The wife and I have recently changed jobs and moved within the last 3 months and free time is hard to come by. It's nice to be able to pop in every once in a while and see the great sucesses everyone seems to be having. For those who are in a similar perdicament or those who have not had the best of luck with friends, family, or occupations, keep your head up. Sorry to hear about your mom Allen, I hope she gets better man.
Anyhow, my hunting season has been tough to say the least. It started out great but I consider myself lucky seeing that I didnt do a lick of work in the off season to make myself sucessful. You know what they say though, sometimes its better to be lucky than good.
Archery openener I was able to stick a spike not 10 minutes after daylight. Unfortunatley, I hit "no man's land" above the shoulder and below the spine and was not able to recover him. I searched for over 2 days and well over a square mile of ground but no such luck. Blood for about 200 yards, then it ran out and I was able to find tracks, tracks soon ran out in the planted pines and I started following every game trail I could find as well as the notorious buzzard circle but to no avail. I have not seen him on any game cameras since so I'm chalking it up to a loss.
Soon I found myself with muzzeloader in hand and managed to sneak out the second weekend of the muzzleloader season. I ended up missing a long tined 6 point that was chasing a doe. At this point I'm beside myself.
Finally doe week was upon me. Time for some family time and redemption. Every year my family trys to spend a couple days together in the woods and luckily our schedules worked with us. I decided to bring the muzzeloader back out and was rewarded early Saturday morning with a nice fat doe. She came out right at sunup about 75 yards in front of me and I was able to make it count. The 100 grains of pyrodex and a 245 grain Hornady did their job. Great bloodtrail. She went 50 yards and piled up.
She had some really unique markings too. I have a piebald buck that frequesnted the are a few years ago. Maybe she was an offspring.
The next mornig my wife was able to harvest a nice doe as well. She was sitting in a stand that has been frequented by a nice 7 point and was hoping to see him, but after 5 does walked in on her in the am, the urge was too much. She put the smack down on a nice nanny at 25 yards with her 7mm-08. DRT. That rifle is a sleeper man. Its a Remington mountain rifle with a little shorter barrel and extermely light. She is deadly with it. The 140 grain pill rocked that doe's world. Rediculous exit at 25 yards. I started thinking that maybe the bullet overexpanded due to the short range at that high velocity. However, its hard to argue with a dead deer.
Good to hear from ya and glad you guys are back in the woods. Thanks for the pics looks like some good eating there.
:toast :toast :rock_on
congrats
I've been teased by Mr Macho Magnum types that my 6lb 18" bbl 7mm08 is nothing more than a pop gun. nothing could be further from the truth, with a leupold 1.5-5 power scope it's good from 0-300 yds, just gotta select a good quality bullet, same as any other caliber. congrats to both. looks like she made a good shot and the bullet performed perfectly, what type was it?
