we were using pinfish and ladyfish. My friend actually caught a nice one trying to catch more bait on a gulp shrimp. They can't resist a live pinfish and with live ladys you can catch some pigs 100 lbs plus and the occaisional monster snook. My biggest to date that I've been able to land about 150 lbs was caught on a small live jack. Where we were fishing you can land most fish on surprising light tackle but further down the canal where there's more rocks it gets almost impossible. I normally use a 4/0 and 8' tarpon rod loaded with 80lb ande line 4 oz wieght and 8/0 gamagatzu circle hook but have caught them on spinning rods and baitcasters.
