I used to fish saint pete pier all the time... When i first moved here i loved it.. Then realized that catching sharks and stingrays and puffers suck.. now i actually know how to fish and catch reds and snook!
Hook a nice size shark and have it pull you all around in your yak, then tell me how much they suck. I have had big sharks pull my bay boat around and it was awesome. :clap
id cut the line.
Next time I come down to Dunedin for a weekend, I will invite you and your son to fish shark alley with me. You will be hooked.
cool..!
I shark fished off the skyway quite a bit when I was in school. Hooked some monsters there and seen some that would make you afraid to go swimming.
Several years ago, Steinhatchee 4th July weekend. There were about 2000 boats and 20,000 people scalloping. A guy got on the VHF and said his partner was fighting a 8' bull shark at the sand bar by big grassy island. It was like a Laurel n Hardy movie. 20000 people got in their boats within seconds.
I remember reading a story about that kid about a year or two ago. He and his friend caught a huge shark off St. Pete pier and said something about just taking the jaws from them. It caused a big stink and people were pizzed.
Too lazy to find the story, but I guess he's at it again...

:eek So people who like to catch sharks are shotty fisherman and don't know how to fish?
Shark fishing is a blast, especially from a small boat or kayak. I love using balloons and a wounded blue runner or mackerel. Those big blacktips or spinners shoot out of the water and your reel starts screaming....
I worked 2 shark trips a week during the summer for a few years, and I'll venture to say that it's one of the best types of fishing for newcomers, aside from catching bream with bobbers. You can go out for 3-4 hours, almost any time of the day, and usually hook up on at least one shark....if not 20-30. It's quick action, good fighting (unless you hook up on a nurse shark), and fine tablefare, all without burning tons of fuel, or cruising around all day, casting at 60 oyster bars with a low percentage of success. Plus....kids LOVE catching sharks.
I understand that people enjoy the challenge of catching redfish and snook and whatnot, but what's wrong with some easy fun too?
