Thermacell pads are definitely way better. They last about 4 hours due to the high allethrin content (about 20%). The coils I use are the ones you burn (Coleman). Only that instead of actually burning them I cut small pieces of about half an inch and put them on the thermacell grill. I hold them in place with a small piece of screen mesh attached by the side of the unit with double sided tape. They heat up the same way as the pad. The only problem is that because the allethrin content is about 1% you need to replace them frequently (around half hour). What I usually do is turn on the unit and heat all the pieces before leaving my truck. Once at my stand, I replace half of the pieces with new ones to make sure some are spreading the repellent at all times and then the remaining pieces 30-40 minutes later. I keep doing that for as long as I’m on my stand. I hunt Green Swamp with no problems. Never used more than 1 coil in one day. I do keep one or two pads just in case, but never had any problems.

I tried using the coil pieces, but I used a piece of a sock to cover the grid. The pilot light kept going out with this setup. The screen material would solve that problem.

Not sure if it was this board or another one where someone said to cut the pad in half. That's an idea.

This is how I use mine. I use double sided velcro to hold the mesh in place. Also, always use an old pad to prevent the coil pieces to slip.
