Turns out my parents got me a Marlin Xl7 .270 for christmas,so im real excited to own my first rifle. I know nothing about scopes or what to look for so I figured I would come to yall with my questions.
The gun does not come with a scope and I want a all around good scope for hogs, deer and maybe turkey.
What should I look for in a scope or what are some good scopes yall own?
Thanks
-Logan

A scope in the 3-9 X 40mm size is your basic all purpose scope. Nikon makes a good scope and are very clear and gather alot of light in low light conditions but they are a little pricy. The Bushnell banner dusk til dawn scopes are decent as well for less money.

this question is gonna gonna get ALOT of different answers. Glass is not something to go too cheap with.IMHO. when the oppertunity for a shot comes, you don't want a busted cross hair, fogged scope, or a scope that doesn't hold zero. I am a big fan of 50mm optics. they draw in alot of light. enough that i have to pay attention to legal shooting times, would be able to still see on them ful moon nights. My rifles wear Bushnell 3200 and 4200 scopes. haven't had any problems yet.

My new Bushnell banner scope was great until I hunted in a little bad weather. It was guaranteed to be fog proof and waterproof. Somehow it lost it's nitro charge and I can't even see thru it anymore. I wonder if a more expensive scope or a different brand would be any different.

like kemster said youre gonna hear alot of different opinions, ( FOR ME ) the scope is the most important part of the gun, then fit, then trigger. also you need to cosider the terrain and typical distances your shots will be. if hunting from the ground shots will be from 10 feet to maybe 50 yds and often at running game, so the lowest power is best, it helps you get on target faster. if yor in a tree range will be longer, but unless your watching fields or something very open were still talking app 20 - 75 yds. if that were my gun for hunting in fla I think I'd put a 2-7 variable with the widest objective lens as possible. and don,t cheap out if you have to replace it you just spent more than buying a good one in the first place. it seems everybody ( me included ) puts way too big a scope on their first gun. 3x9x 40 or 50 is a nice size I have one on my 270 but it's not my first choice for still hunting or close range shooting. the hog I shot sat was 20 yds or less and I had a leupold 1-4 power set on 1 power and it was perfect. also I prefer a heavy duplex reticle for close work. when I was your age and had good eyesight I didn't need a scope to 100 yds, try the open sights if the gun has them and use them until you save enough money to get a nice scope. good luck and keep us posted
