I heard the .45-70 is rough on the shoulder, but I have no experience with the weapon personally. Does sound like an appealing round though as it packs a punch.

I hunt them with a old WW2 Swiss k31 7.5x55 leaves a fair size hole, but it drops them right there. The Swiss made a great gun back then, no need for a recoil pad unless your a bit delicate.
