Damn that must be a good deal. I'm debating the .270's effectiveness on hogs vs the 30/06.

The .270 will do just fine on hogs. Granted, if I'm shooting into a 500lb pig there's no such thing as enough gun but how often do we run into that? That said you can get a very wide range of bullet weights in both the .270 and .30-06. I glanced at Cabelas real quick before typing this and checked nothing more than the Remington CoreLokt ammo carried in their stores. The heaviest weight they carry for the .270 is 150 grain. Many, many people shoot 150 grain ammo out of their -06 as well. How much difference could there be between two basically identical cases (.270 is a slightly modified .30-06 case) shooting the same weight bullet? Yes, you can go heavier out of a .30-06. You have to look pretty hard to find .30-06 ammo bigger than 180 grain although it comes up to 220. You may be able to find .270 ammo up into the 170 grain range if you're really looking for heavier bullets.

Quite frankly, with today's modern bullets you don't need to be quite as concerned about heavy bullet weight as 25 years ago. I watched my son put a 140 grain Barnes TSX bullet through both front shoulders of a 350 lb boar out of a 7mm-08 in July. The same gun and bullet combo did the same thing the year before with a 315lb boar at 280 yards with my old lady yanking the trigger. I'm shooting the Barnes TSX bullets packaged by Federal out of both her 7mm-08 and my .30-06 (180 grain) and we've had a pass-through on 16 hogs, 9 deer and 2 elk. We haven't had a bullet stop in the carcass yet and I do like my shoulder shots. If you get a "premium" bullet you will not be lacking in penetration ability out of the .270 at all.

In conclusion...that .270 is a great deal...buy it. This coming from a die-hard .30-06 fan so that's saying something!
