They are a protective cover that usually zips on or velcros on over the wood. I have them on a Remington 760 Carbine in .308..... the ones in the link below are for a Benelli shotgun, but they make them for almost every make and model of shotgun and rifle....

The gun is sold fellas. My brother came by and picked it up this afternoon before I got home.
