I actually bought 1 Nitro shell from a guy just to say I shot it. While it patterned great, I can't justify $7/per shell. The Hevi-13's are just as good if not better. They use Hevi-shot which is denser than lead. So you can shoot a #5 and it hits like a #4, or shoot a #6 and it hits like a #5.
For me(recommended to me by a turkey guide) I shoot the Winchester High Velocity loads in #5, 3 1/2". The last 2 birds I killed were at 40 and 42 yards and neither moved, deader than a door nail. And that is with a Tru-glo choke tube
If shooting the Nitro Shells make you feel more confident in your equipment, then by all means go for it. Hell the Barnes rifle shells I shoot in my 243 are over $2/ a shell and absolutely unaffordable in my 7mm.
One other thing you need to consider is the type of terrain you turkey hunt. If it is long roads, or open pasture, great. But I think a lot of these turkey guns shoot too tight of a pattern. Seriously, go shoot one of those loads at 10 yards and see how it shoots. The load will be about the size of a golf ball. Happened to me opening morning. Try shooting a 30" gun at a running turkey at 4 yards. Needless to say I missed.
Bottom line is we all use what we think is the best for our gun and hunting style. Benelli shot gun $500-Nitro shells $7 each- No place to hunt "Priceless". lol What I really need is a shell that shoots a pattern big enough to shot those two clowns that just busted my hunt because they did'nt get out of bed early enough. Thank god they don't allow turkey hunting with a riffle anymore. I need some private land. HELP!
Mar. 20 I'm hittin kissimmee wma. Lots of birds there. I saw plenty during bow season, can't hunt the hens though.
I've been going hunting there since I was a kid and the same for my dad. They've opened up a lot of new areas to hunt in that were closed before and one of them is that fenced in area right next to the old yacht club. There is an entrance right at the corner of the fence that leads back to the logging road. You can only hunt with a shotgun and you can't hunt deer in that area but that is were the turkey roost from all the times I've been there.
