I killed my first bird this past spring and it was probably the best bird i have ever had. I know it is good when my 4 yr old daughter is asking me to go shoot another turkey because dinner was so good. She probably asks me every couple weeks when I am going to shoot another one. Good stuff. Everyone has different tastes though.
age makes a difference.
Taste is same but the toughness factor is not. I take the whole bird. If its in the crock pot it will fall apart but i rather have salad.
One bird white and dark meat cooked ground.
one jar mayo as needed
one onion
Relish to taste
then it goes on white bread with cranberry sauce on the side.
I am not 100% positive on this, but I think the 30 minute rule before and after sunrise only applies to public land if that matters (can someone verify this?)
Now for a question of my own.
Has anyone got any experience with diaphram calls that can give me some tips
Go on youtube and watch some videos by Scott Ellis. He is an ole cracker boy and has won all kinds of call contests. has good instructional videos
Make sure the call fits. I have never picked a call off the shelf that fits, all have needed some trimming. I now buy youth models for a smaller pallet. A good seal is very important. I don't know what level you are at with your calling but most guys get a call and just start trying to yelp. Get comfortable with it in your mouth first without trying to do anything. Just find the spot where its most comfortable. Then try to just make a sound work with different younger placement and pressure and you will hear a difference in pitch. That first sound is the top end of the yelp the bottom end is by dropping your jaw. At first I couldn't get consistent with my yelps but I could clucks real good so that's all I did. The clucks is a very underated and underused call in the woods especially for in close calling. I now can make any call with a mouth call but 90% of the time all I do is clucks and purr.try different brands and reed configurations and sizes and you will find a couple that works best for you.
