hogs squeal when matting its natural. way worse than being stuck with an arrow.
I stuck hogs and had buck and does within 5 yards of the tree i am in. Hell a hog a doe and miss on a buck because of a live doe all before 830. Hog first ,squealed and ran into the brush. Then after a cigarette or actually during the cigarette two does at 25 years. 15 minutes later there one doe and one dead at the base of my tree. 5 minutes latter there's a 6 point and the doe. But a squeak from my boot and the stand caught the second does attention.
Here i almost forgot the most amazing part was when the second doe walked over and pawed the dead doe then went back to eating acorns.
I have shoot hogs multiple times then had deer around - but i prefer hogs over deer so to me i not worried so much about deer. There just a bonus.
squealing not a big issue. dragging yes but i sit for hours after a shoot unless its really hot like in the 90s.
the 10 to 1 hunt is the other hunters leaving the wood stirring up the animals.
Don't really want to derail this post. I have seen hogs just squealing in the distance run deer off. Your point is valid to a point. Young deer buck, or doe are not as effected. My point would be directed to the guy who is trying to harvest a trophy, or mature buck. They do not get old by being stupid. One whiff, or noise they do not like, and they will be gone in an instant. You probably have never seen this due to them not even coming in because you already put blood on the ground, or the hogs already ran him off. You might not care about killing a trophy deer, but most hunters even guys that say they do not care about killing one. Really would want to have a trophy deer to brag about at some point in there life. Every now and then even a mature deer can get confused, and some guy gets lucky, and sticks him after already putting blood on the ground. I hope some day I might be that guy. Back to the post. Shoot what is legal, and what is to your personal standard. Be proud of it, and enjoy your time in the woods.
CitySlicker, the last two sentences of your last post say it all! Be legal, be proud and enjoy your time in the woods. Treefarmer
If on a WMA, I usually kill the first legal deer I can. And I try to get a doe in archery. On my lease, little bucks get a free pass. My wife is not that big on venison, so 2-3 deer a year is ample for us. However, I will shoot every hog I see
I am gonna try to knock down a couple of extra deer this year. I have a friend who has a large family to feed, and hasn't been able to make ends meet. He always appreciates any venison I give him. Also might kill some hogs this year. I want to try some sausage recipes. I just don't like killing them from the deer stand. Hopefully I can find a few close to the truck. Those things are like dragging a block of steel.
