I spoke with a guy last week - "I never those safety harness things", but he won't go into the woods at all unless he wears snake boots. Lol.
I hung in a tree once 20+ years ago when a POS climber went down the tree, thankfully I had a harness on. A friend fell last year on the way up a ladder and is just now walking again after having an ankle fusion performed, severe injuries happen and please wear a harness of some form.
I was 22' up in a hang on Saturday in Citrus when the weld in my treestand's seat broke. Sure as hell glad I had my harness on (which I always wear). I had enough tension in the lifeline to help keep me pinned to the tree while I pushed against the tree as hard as I could until I could pull the rope to stand up.

If you keep the tether tight enough that you can sit and stand ONLY, then if you fall, your butt will still be above the foot platform & it's no biggie to get back in. It also wakes you up when you lean too far forward. A safety line & prussic knot (easier than tying your shoe) for ascending & descending is a big +, & you will be protected at ALL times.
I spent the first 15 yrs of my current 26 year career "hooking" poles with the local "utility" CO....never used a safety lanyard on the way up or down. The thought was always if you cut out (fall) clear the pole. (they'll eat you up from the gaff splinters and still end up with something broke 🙂 )
Not arguing the point....only thing is I have a comfort that was acquired years ago while working aloft. One day that may bite me.
When I watch others get into stands..most scare me to death (especially my own kids). There is an apprehension that exists for some that IS what will get you hurt.
