I certainly am known for doing dumb things, but I have a buddies who are "too cool" to wear harnesses. It drives me nuts especially since they both have kids.

I wear a harness when in a lock on or ladder stand. There is nothing else keeping me from falling out of those. I don't see how anyone would not use a harness in an open stand. It just takes one wrong move.
I don't use one when in a climber, I've got the rail around me and the strap between the two halves. Even in our cheap piece of crap, first climber we bought, I've never slipped more then a couple inches. Number one rule "if you lean too far in a climber it will flip you out". Learned that one about 6 foot from the ground. I came down a monster pine tree surrounded by palmettos and when I got almost to the bottom I didn't like how my gun was resting in the palmettos just below me(lowered down by rope). So I reached over to push it away from me and the climber flipped me right out into the palms. Fortunately it the palms slowed the final 6 foot drop to the ground.
Just think about what it will take to get out of the woods if something did happen.

I wear a harness in every stand. Absolutely no reason to say its OK to wear one in this type but not in another
