I would like to get a rifle which would allow me to cover all rifle hunting I may do in Florida.
I like to keep things simple so I would like just one that can do it all.
I was thinking that a Savage 11 series rifle in .308 Winchester caliber with a 3-9X scope would be ideal.
Second choice was same rifle but in .243 caliber.
Others have suggested the Marlin 336 in 30-30 caliber with a 1-4X power scope as long range shooting in Florida is rare.
What do you think? Give me your $0.02 worth.
308/7mm08 good choices (practically the same), a short action length can be had in a smaller, handier, lighter package in about any type firearm you want: bolt, pump, semi, lever. scope I'd go down to 2x7 for wider field of view at closer ranges and get the heavy duplex reticle cross-hairs (they are faster to get on target). a solid 0-300 yard gun for anything FL has to offer. pretty much the same for the 243 and I like the appeal of even less recoil but for something potentialy dangerous game like hogs at very close distances I'd like to be able to throw more bullet wt.
I'd say if you want to cover ALL your bases and you only want one gun, get a shotgun.
Rifled slugs can reach out and touch someone at ranges well over 100 yards, you'll be covered for turkey, waterfowl, small game, and any public land that doesn't allow centerfire...
Plus home defense if you need it.

30-06 would cover ANYTHING in Florida, yet also give you the ability to use the same gun if you were to ever hunt Elk, bear, etc....pretty much any North American game animal.
do not disagree with the shotgun at all for under app 150 yds (if scoped with rifled bbl) but he said "RIFLE- for RIFLE hunting in FL".
