I used to take me ex g/f 5 year old son out to the deer blind with me to get him started. He would last about 2 hours max but that was cool cuz it was for him not me.
i started my girls with a bb gun at 6yrs old, they were shooting a .22 at 7 and now at 11 and 12 they both shoot a .20g and my 11yr old just got her first deer rifle wich is a rossi 243.20g,22 she's my hunter! if it dont have a rollcage my 12 yr old dont want nothing to do with it. she's my racer! but thats ok.. i have the best of both worlds.
Safety,Safety,Safety. My teenager was helping my 6 year old shoot a beebee gun. They were right next to me and in an instence my son put his finger on the end of the gun and pulled the trigger. Ouch! We were lucky it was just a blister. Start them young on gun safety. Take the "Hunter Safety Course". I take my son turkey hunting and we hunt his way so that keeps him interested. We hunt 3 hrs then we do breakfast. Then we go back and play gameboy in the blind. All the while I'm teaching him about hunting.
p.s. (EAR PROTECTION) Good Luck
get him a kid sized 22 single shot for the range and woods. and start the tree rat hunting for short periods of time and work them into longer ones, keep it fun and if he gets bored/hungry fidgety call it a day, keep everything positive and he'll be begging to go back for more.
my dad would always ask me if my gun was on safe when he started me hunting and i got so used to it i still make sure it is 40 years later and passed it on to my youngest son that hunts with me.i always push the safety issue
