It is easy to get turned around. Especially if you lose your sense of direction and can't walk a straight course. It happens to the best of us, happened to me a few times. I thought I was spending the night in Tide Swamp one afternoon cause I turned around and lost all sense of where I was. Every palm tree looked the same. Then panic sets in and you lose it
I'll be up there pretty much every weekend starting next weekend. I have to go to Disney the rest of this week. I'm leaving today and will be back Sat afternoon. I'll be hunting here at home during the week when I have time.
I always carried a compass and now I use my backtrak. That's the best investment I made in a long time.
On weekends there is always someone with me...be it wife, friends, pop or my brother...but I have a little more flexibility in my schedule, as I teach at UCF. If I can, I like to take day trips to Ocala to hunt. Normally, I'm by myself. It that case, its only 75 acres and I tell my wife where I'm going to sit. I will most likely sit from before light to about 3pm...that way I can make it home for dinner. Either way, there is plenty of cell phone coverage in the area and I keep in constant contact with everyone via text messages. When they know I'm in the woods while they are working it kills them....I have to give them a play by play seemingly every 15 minutes. LOL
I hunt alone 100% of the time during bow and muzzleloader seasons but all my friends and my wife know where all my stands are. I carry my smartphone in the woods as a safety precaution.
I was lost in a swamp in a WMA years ago and walked around (in the rain too) looking for my way out of the area. I got turned around and finally found my way out after a few hours. My gps and phone didn't work in the swamp. I found out at that time why my dad always carried a compass lol!
It's nearly impossible to get lost on my lease now though as it's setup in small blocks.
