Shot my Marlin 45-70 yesterday at my range with the factory iron sight.
At 50 yards, I was getting 2" groups but all were about 2" to the left of the center.
Last 7 rounds were fired from 100 yards and I managed to get 5" group but again were all to the left.
I'll get the windage fixed next time.
get a gunsmithing punch that won't mar the finish and tap the rear dovetail to the right a little at a time and the problem will be solved. but I wouldn't do it until you have settled on the ammo you are gonna use. with my eye sight I can barely see those factory iron sights at 50 yds on a clear day from the bench, so I simply put an orange ramp in front, remove the sight hood and open up the rear notch with a file and the difference is unreal. YES I Bubba'd it! did the same for my 20 ga smoothbore slug bbl.
I have two loads that I'm working on now.
First one is the one already fired which is the "practice" load. It's 395gr round flatnose cast bullet going 1,200 fps.
Second load is going to be the "hunting" load which will be 405gr wide flatnose cast bullet going 1,400 fps.
Due to my poor eye sight (especially at dawn and dusk) I'll be mounting a low power scope on the rifle.
I think a 1-4x scope will be sufficient for most application with this rifle.
when younger with feeling in my fingers/steady hands and 20-10 vision it wasn't an issue. if things get any worse a scope will be going on.
Took my Marlin 336 out to the private range up in webster last Saturday. I just had a new barrel installed and the stock refinished and fresh bluing put on the action. It looks like a new gun. I shot with open sites at 25yds and was getting 2" groups left of the bulls eye. Didn't have time to move it back to the 50yd or 100yd benches before I had to leave but that will be next. I was shooting off the shoulder too so I thought it was pretty good. :>)
