On my old 870 the scope mounts to the body and is not on a canter leaver off the barrel. If the end cap is lose at all the barrel can change position slightly in relation to the scope.
I dont use the shoot gun for really anything but turkey. I can use rifles for everything else.
I thought the 870 kick is mild. I tried a buds single shoot 12 gage and it was brutal so i gave him some 3 inch mag slugs to use in it. He said no thanks
the first time i ever shot slugs was thru a sears and roebuck mossberg made pump shotgun with a cylinder bore barrel that i got at a gun show, went to the range and at 50 yds i had touching holes with open sights. still carry that gun as my brush gun but it has no karma.
I believe most rifles will shoot an 1" or better at 100 yds, IF you take the time to find the ammo that the rifle likes. bullet types, weight does matter. I have spent a bunch of cash on ammo the last couple years trying to find the ammo that shoots the best in my rifles. Got my .270s to 1/2" , ARs are 3/4" and tighter. 30/30 is spot on at 200 yds and the 308 is a ragged hole shooter.
I have become very anal about finding the best ammo for my rifles. If i need to thread the needle between trees or take a long shot, i know the rifle will do its part, if i do mine.
Well to me once the rifel is dialed in on the rest then is time to pick it up and shoot. One the rest is what the rifle can do in your hand is what you can do.
well said. 1" groups from a rock steady bench with a scope is no biggie in my opinion. freehand I'd be lucky to get a 4" group. while hunting, freehand is always a last resort for me. you can almost always find a tree/branch to lean/steady yourself or at least take a knee/sit or go prone. the bench is good for testing loads and zeroing sights.
